Ex-Machines

Ex-Machines is an ongoing series of photographs depicting fictional machines assembled from obsolete or repurposed technological components. Strange yet partly familiar, the objects suggest devices from unreal histories or abandoned futures. Their tactile switches, casings, cables and displays evoke nostalgia for earlier technological cultures while refusing to resolve into any recognisable function.

The physical assemblages exist primarily to be photographed, and the images are digitally altered so that the photograph becomes the principal evidence of each machine's existence. Begun in 2009, the series has appeared in exhibitions including MOSTYN Open 20 at MOSTYN, Llandudno, from 8 July to 5 November 2017 and Living in Hyperreality, curated by Kristian Stapleton for Fringe Arts Bath, at FaB 1, 94-96 Walcot Street, Bath, from 25 May to 10 June 2018.
