Deep Relaxation

Vimeo documentation

Deep Relaxation is a kinetic sound installation constructed from portable cassette players and audio tape taken from relaxation and New Age recordings. The work turns technologies associated with private listening and self-improvement into an unstable mechanical ensemble, allowing overlapping voices, instructions and ambient sounds to drift in and out of coherence.

The installation was presented in Spring Roll Call at The Morgue, Chelsea College of Art, London, in 2017. An earlier version was exhibited at Ferreira Projects, London, in 2008. Through its visibly obsolete playback devices and degrading analogue material, Deep Relaxation treats relaxation not as a seamless escape but as a repetitive, mediated and faintly uncanny technological process.
